6 Tips to Make Detangling Your Hair Easier

Maintaining textured hair can be a real pleasure or a source of stress and pain. Detangling is the step that will set the tone for your haircare routine. Proper preparation and execution of this will save you time and above all make this step enjoyable and healthy for you and your hair. You probably already have techniques that work for you but here are a few that could be useful:

Start with moisturized hair

Whether you detangle your hair with hair tools (brushes or combs) or your fingers, the moisture in your hair is a key factor in detangling your hair. Moisturizing your hair is essential when detangling because it improves its elasticity and makes it easier to handle. This makes it easier to run your hair tool and/or fingers through your hair. Moisturizing your hair is therefore something that is imperative to do before and, for some hair types, throughout the detangling process. Detangling dry hair can cause excessive hair breakage and pain. Not great!

Always detangle your hair in sections

Detangling your hair without sectioning it is the best way to avoid tangles. Using sections allows you to give each part the attention it needs, which will make your life easier and prevent you from driving yourself crazy.

Apply the appropriate products

As mentioned above, hair hydration is essential. However, sometimes using only water is not enough. Some hair types require products such as oils and conditioners that help lubricate the hair and separate the strands easily, causing less pain and damage. Now, buying the first product that appears on the internet is not necessarily the best solution. Choose products that are suitable for your hair type and that contain the least amount of harmful products for you.

Use the right tools

When it comes to detangling, there are 3 types of people: those who do it by hand, those who use only tools, and those who use both. Detangling by hand allows you to be gentler with your curls, which leads to less breakage and pain. If you want a little more precision, you can use a comb or a detangling brush. Note that it is important to choose tools that are appropriate for your hair. A brush that is effective for straight hair can be a source of pain and breakage for curly hair.

Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots.

It is advisable to start combing the ends of your hair while slowly working your way up the shaft to the roots. Starting detangling from the roots causes the knots to move from the roots to the ends, causing pain, damage, breakage, tears and crying.

Braid each section when finished

This step helps you separate the already detangled hair from the hair that needs to be detangled. It also helps prevent knots from re-forming, which is definitely not what we want.
